Putin’s approval rating falls to lowest level since before Ukraine war

Moscow: Support for Russian President Vladimir Putin has dropped to its lowest level since before the war in Ukraine began in 2022, according to new data from the state pollster VTsIOM.

The survey shows that Putin’s approval rating has fallen to about 65.6 percent in April. This is a noticeable decline from around 73 percent just a month earlier and marks the lowest level recorded since before the conflict started.

The findings point to a gradual change in public mood after more than four years of war. While support for the president remains relatively strong, the drop suggests growing pressure inside the country.

Economic concerns appear to be one of the main reasons behind the shift. Russia’s economy has slowed in recent months, and rising costs are affecting daily life for many people. At the same time, tighter restrictions on internet access, including limits on virtual private networks and some online services, have caused frustration among citizens.

There are also signs of fatigue as the war continues with no clear end in sight. Some voices on social media and among public commentators have begun to speak more openly about everyday challenges, including inflation and infrastructure problems.

Despite the decline, Putin’s overall rating remains higher than that of many leaders around the world. However, analysts say the trend will be closely watched, especially as Russia prepares for parliamentary elections later this year.

Observers also note that opinion polls in Russia may not fully reflect public sentiment, as some people may be cautious about expressing their views openly.

Even so, the latest figures suggest that public support, while still solid, is no longer as steady as it was in the early years of the war.
