New Delhi: The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) hosted a heartfelt farewell in honour of Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, marking the conclusion of his diplomatic and pastoral service in India and Nepal from March 13, 2021 to April 23, 2026. The gathering took place at the Apostolic Nunciature in New Delhi, bringing together Church leaders, diplomats, and distinguished guests.
The occasion witnessed the presence of several prominent figures, including Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, Archbishop Peter Machado, Archbishop Anil Couto, Cardinal Baselios Mar Cleemis, Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, and Archbishop Raphy Manjaly. They were joined by over fifteen bishops from northern India, along with Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara. Diplomats representing various nations and several notable personalities from the capital also attended the event.
In his address, Cardinal Ferrão expressed deep appreciation for Archbishop Girelli’s committed service, particularly emphasizing his compassion for the marginalized and his tireless efforts to strengthen unity within the Church and the wider society.
Responding to the tribute, Archbishop Girelli conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the bishops and Church leaders of India for their collaboration and support throughout his tenure. Reflecting on his mission, he described his time in India as both demanding and deeply rewarding. He praised the Indian Church for its vitality, highlighting its rich liturgical heritage and the remarkable diversity of its cultures, languages, and traditions.
As a mark of esteem, Cardinal Ferrão presented a commemorative memento to the outgoing Nuncio. Archbishop Machado and Archbishop Couto honored him with a traditional Indian shawl, while Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara handed over a formal letter of gratitude on behalf of the Latin Church in India.
Archbishop Girelli departed India on April 24, 2026, to begin his new assignment in Croatia, continuing his diplomatic mission in Eastern Europe.
