Iran foreign minister visits Russia as Trump urges Tehran to initiate talks

Moscow: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi arrived in Russia on Monday for high level talks, as diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States remain uncertain.

Araqchi is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the latest developments in the conflict and explore ways to strengthen cooperation between Tehran and Moscow. His visit comes at a time when Iran is seeking support from key allies while keeping communication channels open with Washington.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump said Iran could reach out if it wants negotiations, signalling that the United States is willing to talk but expects Tehran to take the first step. His remarks followed the cancellation of planned face to face talks, which had raised hopes for direct engagement between the two sides.

Despite the setback, indirect contacts continue through mediators, including regional partners. However, both sides remain divided on how to begin negotiations. Iran has proposed a step by step approach that would start with ending hostilities and easing tensions in key shipping routes before addressing its nuclear programme. The United States, on the other hand, insists that Iran’s nuclear activities must be the first priority in any talks.

The conflict has also begun to affect global trade, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions have led to rising concerns over oil supplies and increasing prices. Both sides have used economic and military pressure to strengthen their positions, making progress more difficult.

Tensions in the wider region are adding to the complexity. Ongoing clashes involving Iran backed groups and regional actors have made it harder to separate the conflict from broader geopolitical issues. Iran has indicated that wider regional discussions cannot move forward without progress on these fronts.

For now, diplomacy continues behind the scenes, but there is no clear breakthrough. Iran is balancing talks with the United States while deepening ties with Russia, and Washington is keeping the door open for negotiations under strict conditions.

The situation remains fragile, with both sides showing willingness to engage but little sign of immediate agreement.
