UAE updates tourist visa system in 2026 with flexible options for travellers

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates has introduced a more flexible and streamlined tourist visa system in 2026, making it easier for international visitors to plan trips to popular destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The updated system offers a wider range of visa options, improved digital application processes, and clearer fee structures, benefiting travellers from many countries, including Uganda.

Tourist visas remain essential for most visitors, as visa on arrival is not available for Ugandan passport holders. Applicants are required to complete the process before travel, either through airlines, approved travel agencies, or official UAE immigration platforms.

The most commonly used visas are short term tourist visas. These include 14 day, 30 day, and 60 day options. The 30 day visa continues to be the most popular choice for tourists, while the 60 day visa is preferred by those planning longer stays. These visas are generally valid for entry within 60 days from the date of issue and can often be extended once, depending on the conditions.

For travellers who wish to stay longer, the UAE offers 90 day and 180 day visit visas. The 180 day visa allows visitors to remain in the country for up to six months continuously, making it suitable for extended holidays or family visits. Authorities have also expanded multiple entry visas, including long term options such as the five year multiple entry visa, which allows frequent travellers to enter and leave the country without repeated applications.

Transit visas are also available for short stays. These include 48 hour and 96 hour visas, mainly used by passengers passing through UAE airports.

Visa fees vary depending on the type and duration of stay, as well as additional service charges. A 30 day visa typically costs between AED 350 and AED 550, while a 60 day visa may range from AED 600 to AED 900. Longer visas such as the 90 day option can cost up to AED 1500. For Ugandan applicants, this translates into a higher total cost when converted into local currency and including processing charges.

Applicants must meet basic requirements, including a passport valid for at least six months, a recent photograph, confirmed travel bookings, and proof of accommodation. In some cases, proof of financial ability may also be requested. The process has become more digital in recent years, allowing applicants to submit documents and track applications online.

The standard processing time is usually between three to five working days, although express services are available for faster approval at an extra cost. Officials advise applicants to apply early and ensure that all information is accurate to avoid delays or rejection.

Travel experts say the updated visa system reflects the UAE’s continued focus on tourism and global connectivity. By offering a wider range of visa options and improving digital access, the country aims to attract more visitors and support its growing tourism sector.

With its modern cities, cultural attractions, and strong transport links, the UAE remains a key destination for travellers from Africa and beyond. The latest changes are expected to make travel planning simpler and more convenient for those looking to visit the country in 2026.
