US and Philippines deploy anti ship missile system near Taiwan during joint war drills

Manila: The United States and the Philippines have deployed a powerful anti ship missile system in the northern Philippine province of Batanes as part of their ongoing joint military exercises, in a move that highlights growing security concerns in the region near Taiwan.

The deployment took place during the annual Balikatan exercises, one of the largest military drills conducted by the two allies. This year’s drills involve more than 17,000 troops, including around 10,000 from the United States, making it one of the most extensive editions of the exercise in recent years.

At the center of attention is the Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, a land based missile platform designed to strike enemy ships from coastal positions. The system was transported by a United States military aircraft and positioned in Basco, a town in Batanes, which lies about 160 kilometers south of Taiwan.

Military officials clarified that the missile system was not used for live firing during the exercise. Instead, it was deployed for training, simulation, and testing how quickly and effectively such equipment can be moved and set up in strategic areas.

Batanes holds special importance because of its location along the Luzon Strait, a key waterway that connects the South China Sea to the Pacific Ocean. This narrow stretch of sea is considered highly sensitive in any potential conflict involving Taiwan, as it is a major route for naval movement.

The drills come at a time of rising tension in the region. China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and has increased its military activities near the island in recent years. The United States, along with its allies, has responded by strengthening its presence and cooperation in the Indo Pacific region.

Apart from the United States and the Philippines, other countries including Japan, Australia, and New Zealand are also taking part in different aspects of the exercises. The drills include coastal defense, maritime strike simulations, and counter landing operations designed to prepare forces for possible conflict scenarios.

Philippine officials have stressed that the exercises are defensive in nature and are meant to improve readiness and cooperation between allied forces. They have also said that the country is taking steps to prepare for any emergency situations, including plans to assist and possibly evacuate Filipino workers living in Taiwan if tensions worsen.

The presence of advanced missile systems so close to Taiwan is likely to draw attention from China, which has often criticized such military cooperation in the region. Analysts say the deployment reflects a broader strategy by the United States and its partners to strengthen deterrence and maintain stability in a region that is becoming increasingly important for global security.

For local communities in Batanes, the arrival of foreign troops and advanced military equipment has brought both curiosity and concern. While some residents see it as a sign of protection, others worry about the risks that come with being at the center of geopolitical tensions.

As the Balikatan exercises continue, the deployment of the anti ship missile system stands as a clear signal of the deepening defense ties between the United States and the Philippines, and the growing focus on the security situation around Taiwan and the wider Indo Pacific region.
