UDF sweeps Kerala with massive victory as results show clear shift in voter mood

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress led United Democratic Front has recorded a sweeping victory in the Kerala Assembly elections, with the latest results showing a commanding lead that has reached 103 seats in the 140 member House. The outcome marks a major political shift in Kerala and signals a strong mandate for change from the voters.

According to the latest confirmed trends, the UDF is leading in 103 seats, far ahead of the ruling Left Democratic Front, which is trailing with about 35 seats. The BJP led National Democratic Alliance has managed to secure only around two seats, while other parties have not made any notable gains.

The scale of the UDF victory is significant in a state known for closely contested elections and a long tradition of power alternating between two major alliances. This time, however, the margin of victory has gone far beyond expectations, pointing to a clear and decisive shift in public opinion.

Counting began early in the morning with signs of a competitive race, but the UDF quickly moved ahead as more rounds were completed. By mid morning, the alliance had crossed the majority mark of 71 seats and continued to build its lead steadily. As counting progressed, it became clear that the election was turning into a landslide.

Leaders of the UDF responded with cautious optimism as the trends became stronger. Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said the early numbers reflected a positive response from the people, while also urging patience until the final results were declared. At the same time, party workers and supporters celebrated across many parts of the state as the lead widened.

The result is a major setback for the Left Democratic Front led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, which has been in power since 2016. The LDF had hoped to retain office after two consecutive terms, but the current outcome suggests strong dissatisfaction among voters. Several senior leaders of the ruling alliance have faced tough contests, and the overall performance of the front has fallen sharply compared to previous elections.

Political observers say that multiple factors may have contributed to the UDF surge. Public concerns over economic challenges, unemployment, and governance issues appear to have played an important role. In addition, Kerala’s long standing pattern of alternating governments seems to have returned, with voters opting for change after two terms of the same administration.

The leadership of V. D. Satheesan, who is widely seen as the chief ministerial face of the UDF, has also been a key factor. He is leading comfortably in his constituency, strengthening expectations that he could take charge as the next chief minister once the results are officially confirmed.

The BJP led NDA continues to remain a minor force in the state’s political landscape, with only a limited presence in the Assembly despite repeated efforts to expand its base.

As the final rounds of counting conclude, the overall direction of the verdict is already clear. The United Democratic Front is set to return to power after ten years, and with one of the strongest mandates seen in recent decades.

The 2026 Kerala election result is not just a victory for one alliance but a clear message from the people. It reflects their expectations for change and sets the stage for a new phase in the state’s political journey.
