Guwahati: Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in once again as the Chief Minister of Assam on Monday, marking a major political victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies in the northeastern state. The grand oath taking ceremony was held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several senior leaders from National Democratic Alliance ruled states.
The BJP led alliance returned to power with a strong mandate in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections. The alliance won 102 seats in the 126 member Assembly, while the BJP alone secured 82 seats. Political observers described the result as a significant milestone for the party in Assam, as it was the first time the BJP crossed the majority mark on its own in the state.
Along with Sarma, several ministers also took oath as members of the new cabinet. Senior BJP leaders Ajanta Neog and Rameswar Teli were among those sworn in. Leaders from alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front were also included in the ministry. Sources said that the cabinet may be expanded further in the coming days.
Thousands of supporters gathered at the venue to witness the ceremony. Security arrangements were tightened across Guwahati due to the presence of top national leaders. Traffic restrictions and diversions were put in place in many parts of the city from early morning.
Before the ceremony, BJP leaders visited the famous Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati to offer prayers and seek blessings. The temple visit was seen as an important symbolic gesture before the beginning of the new government’s term.
Speaking after taking oath, Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the people of Assam for giving the alliance another opportunity to govern the state. He said the new government would continue to focus on development, welfare schemes, employment generation and infrastructure projects. Sarma also promised faster implementation of public welfare programmes in both urban and rural areas.
During his earlier campaign speeches, Sarma had said that his first term as Chief Minister was only a beginning and that the second term would bring larger development projects and stronger governance measures. One of the major issues highlighted by him was the continued drive against illegal land encroachment on government property across Assam.
Himanta Biswa Sarma first became Chief Minister in 2021 after the BJP retained power in Assam. Over the years, he emerged as one of the most influential political leaders in northeastern India. Before joining the BJP in 2015, he had been a senior leader in the Congress party and served in previous Assam governments.
Political analysts believe Sarma’s leadership style, his active public outreach and the BJP’s organisational strength played a major role in the alliance’s strong victory this year. His government’s focus on roads, healthcare, education and welfare benefits also helped strengthen support among voters.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, accepted the election result but said they would continue to raise public issues inside and outside the Assembly. Meanwhile, BJP workers celebrated across Assam with rallies, sweets and cultural programmes after the swearing in ceremony.
The new government is expected to begin work immediately on its election promises and administrative plans. Many people in Assam are now watching closely to see how the second term of Himanta Biswa Sarma will shape the future of the state in the coming years.
