Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay won a major political victory on Wednesday after his government comfortably passed the trust vote in the State Assembly with the support of 144 MLAs. The victory has strengthened the position of Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, marking an important moment in the changing political landscape of the southern Indian state.
The trust vote was the first major challenge faced by the new government after the recent Assembly elections. Vijay’s party had emerged as the single largest party but did not initially have enough numbers to form a government on its own. TVK later secured support from Congress, Left parties, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League to cross the majority mark and take power.
However, Wednesday’s vote showed that the support for Vijay’s government extended beyond his alliance partners. The final count of 144 votes in favour of the government indicated that a section of the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had crossed over to support the trust motion despite party instructions to oppose it.
Political observers described the development as a serious setback for AIADMK leadership. Party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami had issued strict directions asking all party MLAs to vote against the government. But reports from Chennai suggested that nearly two dozen rebel legislators ignored the directive and voted in favour of Vijay’s administration.
The Assembly session witnessed dramatic scenes throughout the day. Members of the opposition DMK staged protests and later walked out before the voting process. DMK leaders accused the ruling side of encouraging divisions within opposition ranks and questioned the political methods used to secure additional support. Despite the protests, the voting process continued smoothly under the supervision of the Assembly Speaker.
Several regional parties also played a key role during the confidence motion. While some opposition members abstained from voting, others unexpectedly backed the government. The lone MLA from the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam also voted in favour of the trust motion, creating fresh tensions within his own party leadership.
The successful floor test has given Vijay stronger political authority only months after entering electoral politics in a serious way. The actor turned politician has quickly transformed himself into a central figure in Tamil Nadu politics. His rise has attracted strong support from younger voters and urban sections of the electorate who were looking for an alternative to the traditional dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.
For decades, Tamil Nadu politics has mainly revolved around the two Dravidian giants. But the latest developments indicate that the political equation in the state may be changing rapidly. Analysts believe the rebellion inside AIADMK could deepen in the coming weeks, especially if more legislators begin to openly support the ruling side.
The trust vote victory also gives the Vijay government breathing space to focus on governance and policy decisions without immediate fears about its stability. Supporters of the Chief Minister celebrated outside the Assembly and at various places across the state after the result was announced. Party workers described the victory as a sign that Vijay’s leadership was gaining wider acceptance beyond his own party base.
Meanwhile, opposition parties are expected to hold internal discussions over the outcome of the vote and the growing divisions within their camps. Political experts say the coming months could witness major realignments in Tamil Nadu politics as parties prepare for future electoral battles.
With the trust vote now behind him, Vijay faces the challenge of delivering on the promises that brought his party to power while also managing the complex alliance and political equations that helped secure his government’s survival in the Assembly.
