Moscow: Russia has launched a large scale military exercise involving nuclear capable forces, with the Defence Ministry releasing dramatic video footage showing troops transporting nuclear warheads and preparing missile systems for deployment. The exercise, one of the biggest of its kind in recent years, comes at a time of growing tension between Russia and Western countries over the continuing war in Ukraine.
Russian state television broadcast images of military convoys moving through forested areas, soldiers loading missile launchers and crews carrying out readiness checks on weapons systems. Officials in Moscow said the exercise is designed to test the preparedness of the country’s strategic and tactical nuclear forces in the event of a serious security threat.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, nearly 64,000 military personnel are taking part in the operation. The drills also involve more than 200 missile launchers, around 140 military aircraft, dozens of warships and submarines, and several military districts across the country. Strategic Rocket Forces, long range bomber units and naval fleets from the Arctic and Pacific regions are all participating.
The ministry said the exercise includes both ballistic and cruise missile launch simulations, along with rapid deployment and coordination drills. Russian officials described the operation as a routine military activity aimed at maintaining combat readiness and strengthening national defence capabilities.
Belarus is also involved in some parts of the exercise. The Belarusian government confirmed earlier this week that its armed forces are carrying out joint training activities with Russian military units linked to tactical nuclear systems. Belarus has hosted Russian tactical nuclear weapons since 2023, although Moscow insists the weapons remain under Russian control.
The timing of the exercise has drawn international attention because it comes during a period of increased military pressure linked to the Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian drone strikes inside Russian territory have intensified in recent weeks, with attacks reported near military facilities, fuel depots and transport infrastructure. Russia has responded with large scale missile and drone attacks across Ukraine.
Western governments have repeatedly expressed concern over Russia’s use of nuclear rhetoric since the war began more than four years ago. Moscow has often accused NATO countries of escalating the conflict by supplying advanced weapons and intelligence support to Ukraine. Russian leaders have warned that direct confrontation between nuclear powers could lead to dangerous consequences.
President Vladimir Putin has in recent months continued to highlight Russia’s nuclear strength during speeches and military events. Earlier this month, he praised the country’s strategic missile systems, including the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which Russia says can carry multiple nuclear warheads over long distances.
Military analysts say the latest exercise serves both military and political purposes. While the drills help train troops and test equipment, they also send a message to Western governments that Russia remains prepared to defend its strategic interests with all available means.
Experts also note that Russia regularly conducts nuclear related exercises, although the scale and publicity surrounding this year’s operation appear larger than usual. The release of official video footage showing nuclear warheads being moved has further increased global concern and attracted widespread media attention.
Despite the tense atmosphere, there has been no public indication from either Russia or NATO that nuclear weapons are being prepared for actual use. International observers continue to monitor the situation closely as the conflict in Ukraine remains one of the world’s most dangerous geopolitical crises.
