Kerala tightens Ebola precautions with 21 day quarantine for travellers

Thiruvanthapuram: The Kerala government has introduced strict health monitoring measures for travellers arriving from Ebola affected countries as global concern rises over the latest outbreak reported in parts of Africa. Authorities have announced a mandatory 21 day quarantine for people arriving from countries where Ebola infections have been confirmed, while health screening and surveillance systems across the state have also been strengthened.

The move comes after the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Health officials in Kerala said the precautionary steps are aimed at preventing any possible imported infections and ensuring early detection if a suspected case appears.

According to state health authorities, passengers arriving from affected regions will undergo detailed health screening at airports and will be monitored for symptoms during the quarantine period. Officials explained that the 21 day observation period matches the known incubation time of the Ebola virus, during which symptoms may appear after exposure.

The Kerala Health Department has directed all district medical officers to remain on alert and ensure hospitals are prepared to isolate and treat suspected cases if necessary. Special instructions have also been issued to airports, immigration officials, and local health teams to maintain close coordination.

Health experts say Ebola is a severe viral disease that spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or contaminated surfaces and materials. Symptoms usually begin with fever, weakness, body pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea, and in serious cases can lead to internal and external bleeding. Though the disease is not airborne like influenza or COVID 19, it can spread rapidly if proper precautions are not followed.

Officials said Kerala’s experience in handling previous health emergencies such as the Nipah virus outbreaks and the COVID 19 pandemic has helped the state build stronger surveillance and emergency response systems. Rapid response teams and isolation facilities are reportedly being kept ready in major hospitals across the state.

The latest Ebola outbreak has especially raised concerns because cases have been reported near border areas and in urban centres, including Uganda’s capital Kampala. According to international health agencies, some infections have been linked to travel between Congo and Uganda, increasing fears about cross border transmission. The outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no widely approved vaccine.

India’s Directorate General of Health Services has also issued a nationwide advisory asking travellers from Ebola affected countries to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms. States have been advised to strengthen airport surveillance, contact tracing, and infection control measures.

Public health experts have urged people not to panic, saying the measures announced by Kerala are preventive and necessary. They noted that early detection, strict isolation, and proper protective measures are highly effective in controlling the spread of Ebola.

Meanwhile, several countries across Asia and other regions have also stepped up monitoring at airports following the WHO emergency declaration. Enhanced screening procedures and health advisories have been introduced in countries including Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the United States.

Health officials in Kerala said awareness campaigns will also be conducted to educate the public and healthcare workers about the symptoms of Ebola and the importance of reporting suspected cases quickly. Authorities stressed that cooperation from travellers and the public will play a major role in preventing the spread of the disease.

The state government has assured residents that there is no confirmed Ebola case in Kerala at present and that all measures are being taken purely as a precaution to protect public health.
