Zelenskyy expects new US proposals for Ukraine peace talks

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he expects the United States to introduce new proposals and formats for peace negotiations aimed at ending the long running war between Ukraine and Russia, as diplomatic efforts gather momentum once again.

Speaking amid renewed international discussions, Zelenskyy said Ukraine remains ready for dialogue and is waiting to see what ideas Washington may bring forward in the coming days. His remarks come at a time when the United States, European leaders, and other international actors are attempting to revive peace efforts after months of military escalation and stalled diplomacy.

The latest developments follow recent contacts between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump recently said that Russia and Ukraine should move quickly toward direct negotiations and a possible ceasefire. However, Moscow has signaled that any meaningful agreement would require detailed preparation and lengthy discussions.

Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine is open to proposals that could help bring peace, but he repeated that Kyiv would not accept any settlement that undermines the country’s sovereignty or territorial integrity. Ukrainian officials continue to insist that Russian troops must withdraw from occupied territories before a lasting agreement can be reached.

The war, which has now continued for more than four years, has caused widespread destruction across Ukraine, displaced millions of civilians, and created deep political tensions between Russia and Western nations. Despite repeated diplomatic initiatives, the two sides remain sharply divided over territory, security guarantees, and the future political status of contested regions.

In recent months, several rounds of international discussions have taken place in different countries, including meetings involving representatives from the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. Talks reportedly focused on possible ceasefires, humanitarian issues, prisoner exchanges, and broader political arrangements aimed at reducing hostilities.

European governments are also increasing their involvement in the diplomatic process. Leaders within the European Union have expressed concern that the conflict could continue indefinitely if negotiations fail to produce concrete results. Some European officials are reportedly considering appointing a senior envoy to coordinate more closely with Washington and maintain communication channels with Moscow.

At the same time, fighting on the ground continues. Ukrainian authorities have accused Russian forces of carrying out missile and drone attacks even during periods when temporary ceasefire discussions were underway. Russia, meanwhile, has accused Ukraine of violating previous truce arrangements.

The growing diplomatic activity reflects rising international pressure to find a path toward ending the conflict. Many countries fear that a prolonged war could further damage global economic stability, energy markets, and international security.

There have also been discussions about possible venues for future peace negotiations. Turkey, Switzerland, and the Holy See have all been mentioned as potential locations for talks. While no official announcement has been made regarding the next round of negotiations, diplomats say multiple options are being explored behind the scenes.

Political analysts believe the coming weeks could be important for determining whether fresh diplomatic proposals can narrow the gap between Kyiv and Moscow. However, many observers remain cautious, noting that previous negotiation attempts collapsed because of deep mistrust and conflicting demands from both sides.

Even so, Zelenskyy’s latest comments suggest Ukraine is prepared to continue engaging with international partners as new ideas emerge. For many Ukrainians living through years of war, hopes for peace remain tied to whether world powers can finally help create conditions for serious and lasting negotiations.
