Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of violence in Ukraine and appealed once again for peace, saying that war only increases suffering and destroys human lives.
Speaking at the end of his weekly General Audience at the Vatican, the Pope said he was following developments in Ukraine closely as Russian attacks have intensified in recent days. He offered prayers and solidarity to all those affected, especially civilians caught in the violence.
“I wish to express my closeness to all those suffering because of the recent attacks, including those against civilians,” the Pope said before thousands of pilgrims gathered for the audience.
Reflecting on the consequences of war, Pope Leo XIV said conflicts never solve problems but instead deepen pain and hatred among people. He stressed that every missile and drone strike leaves behind not only physical destruction but also emotional and spiritual wounds.
“Wherever missiles and drones fall, hopes also collapse,” the Pope said. “Homes and places of worship are destroyed, and innocent lives are shattered.”
The Holy Father entrusted all people suffering because of war to the protection of the Virgin Mary, whom he invoked as Queen of Peace. His appeal came as Ukraine continues to face renewed attacks that have affected several civilian areas and caused growing international concern.
During the audience, Pope Leo XIV also turned his attention to Lebanon, where fresh violence has recently raised fears of further instability in the region. Addressing Arabic and French speaking pilgrims from Lebanon, the Pope offered words of comfort and faith.
He reminded the faithful that Mary remains close to believers in moments of fear and suffering, praying for them and caring for them with maternal love. The Pope prayed that the Lord would bless and protect the Lebanese people from all evil during this difficult time.
The General Audience also included a special greeting to Polish pilgrims. Pope Leo XIV recalled that Poland celebrated Mother’s Day on Tuesday and used the occasion to thank mothers for their sacrifices and love.
The Pope praised mothers for giving life generously and for teaching children the values of faith, compassion, and love for others. He said mothers play an important role in helping children grow closer to God and become caring members of society.
He prayed that the Holy Mother of God would intercede for all mothers and help them remain united with Jesus throughout their lives.
Pope Leo XIV also encouraged the Polish people to continue protecting human life at every stage, from conception to natural death. He concluded his message by offering his blessing to all the pilgrims present at the audience.
Pope’s repeated appeals for peace in Ukraine and other conflict affected regions continue to reflect the Vatican’s call for dialogue, reconciliation, and respect for human dignity in the face of growing global tensions.
