Musk says SpaceX has no long term AI lease deal with Anthropic

Washington: Elon Musk has clarified that SpaceX has not entered into a long term agreement with artificial intelligence company Anthropic for the use of its massive Colossus AI computing facility. The statement came after reports suggested that Anthropic had secured a multi year arrangement worth billions of dollars to use SpaceX’s growing AI infrastructure in Memphis, Tennessee.

Musk addressed the issue through posts on X, saying that the current arrangement between the companies is only temporary. According to him, the deal covers a six month lease period and includes a mutual cancellation option after 90 days. He stressed that SpaceX wanted flexibility because demand for advanced AI computing power is rising rapidly around the world.

The clarification follows reports claiming that Anthropic had signed a deal that could extend until 2029. Those reports said the agreement involved access to the Colossus and Colossus II supercomputing systems that support large scale artificial intelligence training. The estimated value of the arrangement was reportedly around 1.25 billion dollars per month, making it one of the biggest AI infrastructure agreements ever discussed publicly.

Musk rejected the idea that SpaceX had locked itself into a long term commitment. He said the company intentionally chose a short agreement because the future demand for computing resources is uncertain. He also assured that Anthropic would not suddenly lose access to the systems and that SpaceX would provide enough time for a smooth transition if the partnership is not extended.

The Colossus project has become one of the most talked about AI infrastructure developments in the technology world. Located in Memphis, the facility was originally created to support Musk’s own AI company xAI and its Grok chatbot systems. Over the past year, the project has expanded quickly and industry experts believe it could eventually contain more than one million graphics processing units, commonly known as GPUs.

These chips are essential for training modern artificial intelligence models. As AI companies compete to build faster and more advanced systems, demand for GPUs, electricity and data center space has increased sharply. Many companies are struggling to secure enough computing power to keep up with growing customer demand.

Anthropic is one of the leading AI companies in the world and is best known for its Claude AI assistant. The company has experienced rapid growth in recent months as more businesses and consumers adopt AI tools for daily use. Reports indicate that Anthropic has been actively searching for additional computing resources to support the expansion of its AI systems.

The partnership between SpaceX and Anthropic has drawn attention because xAI and Anthropic are considered competitors in the artificial intelligence race. Musk has often criticized other AI firms in the past, especially OpenAI, over concerns about transparency and safety. However, recent comments from Musk suggested that he believes Anthropic’s work could be beneficial for humanity.

Financial details surrounding SpaceX’s AI operations have also raised interest among analysts. Recent reports showed that the company’s AI division generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue during the first quarter of 2026. At the same time, heavy spending on chips, servers and data centers reportedly pushed operating losses into the billions of dollars.

Technology experts say Musk’s latest comments show how uncertain and competitive the AI industry has become. Companies are investing enormous amounts of money to secure computing infrastructure, while also trying to protect their own long term strategic interests.

For now, the relationship between SpaceX and Anthropic appears to remain temporary, but industry observers believe it could still play an important role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence development.
