Pope Leo XIV rushes to help priest overcome by heat in St Peter’s Square

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV showed a personal gesture of care and compassion after coming to the aid of an elderly priest who became ill during the General Audience in St Peter’s Square on May 27.

The touching moment drew attention from pilgrims and visitors gathered in the square and quickly spread across the world through photographs and videos shared online.

The priest who fell ill was Father Diego Semeraro from Martina Franca in southern Italy. He had travelled to Rome with his brother, Father Franco Semeraro, to attend the Wednesday audience with the Pope.

According to Vatican News, Father Diego began to feel faint after standing for nearly three hours under the strong sun during the gathering. The incident happened near the end of the audience as people were greeting the Pope in the front rows of the square.

Witnesses saw several people rushing to assist the priest after he collapsed. Moments later, Pope Leo XIV himself stepped down from the platform where he had been speaking and went directly to Father Diego. The Pope knelt beside him to check on his condition and offer help.

Father Franco described the moment as deeply moving and unexpected.

“It was an extraordinary thing,” he told Vatican News.

He explained that his brother suddenly lost strength because of the heat and fell heavily to the ground. Although Father Diego was shaken and later felt some soreness, he quickly recovered and was reported to be in stable condition.

Father Franco said Pope Leo XIV was the very first person to kneel beside his brother.

Father Diego himself was surprised when he realised Pope was helping him. According to Father Franco, the priest looked at the Pontiff and said, “Your Holiness, is that really you?”

Pope later shook Father Diego’s hand and gave him a rosary as a sign of closeness and blessing.

After receiving medical attention at the Vatican emergency clinic, doctors reportedly found no serious health problems. Father Diego later had lunch and even celebrated Mass the same day.

The visit to Rome was especially meaningful for the two brothers. Father Franco is celebrating 60 years since his priestly ordination and had presented Pope Leo XIV with a special photo album showing the arrival of the relics of Saint Augustine in Martina Franca about two decades ago.

For Father Diego, the moment also brought back memories of another important day in St Peter’s Square. In 1970, he was ordained a priest there by Pope Paul VI. Over the years, he faithfully served at the Holy Family parish in Martina Franca and carried out many years of pastoral ministry.

Pope’s simple act of kneeling beside an elderly priest touched many Catholics and observers around the world. The moment reflected Pope Leo XIV’s closeness to people and his readiness to personally respond to someone in need, even in the middle of a large public gathering.
