India deepens ties with Myanmar as Modi hosts President Min Aung Hlaing

New Delhi: India has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close engagement with Myanmar after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi, marking an important step in relations between the neighboring countries amid continuing political and security challenges in Myanmar.

The visit is the first official trip to India by Min Aung Hlaing since he became president in April this year. His arrival in New Delhi has drawn international attention because of Myanmar's political situation following the military takeover in 2021, which led to widespread unrest, armed conflict, and criticism from Western governments and human rights organizations.

During their meeting, Modi and Min Aung Hlaing discussed a wide range of issues, including trade, border security, connectivity projects, defense cooperation, cybercrime, and efforts to combat human trafficking. Officials from both countries described the discussions as constructive and focused on strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

India defended its decision to engage with Myanmar's leadership, saying that dialogue remains the most effective way to address regional concerns. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said New Delhi's engagement with Myanmar is guided by practical considerations and regional interests rather than an attempt to influence the country's internal political developments.

The talks also focused heavily on security issues along the shared border. India shares a long and sensitive border with Myanmar, particularly with its northeastern states. Ongoing conflict inside Myanmar has led to concerns about cross border movement of armed groups, refugees, and illegal activities.

Indian officials reportedly raised concerns about militant groups operating near the frontier and sought stronger cooperation from Myanmar to ensure that its territory is not used for activities that could threaten India's security. Myanmar's leadership assured India that it remains committed to working together on border management and regional stability.

Another major topic of discussion was economic cooperation. Both sides agreed to accelerate infrastructure and connectivity projects that are seen as crucial for linking India more closely with Southeast Asia. Myanmar occupies a strategic position in India's Act East policy, which seeks to expand trade and economic partnerships with countries in the region.

The leaders also discussed opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investment. As part of his visit, Min Aung Hlaing is expected to meet business leaders and investors in Mumbai to explore new areas of economic cooperation.

Analysts believe the visit carries broader strategic significance. Myanmar has become an important arena for regional competition between India and China. New Delhi views stronger engagement with Myanmar as essential for protecting its strategic interests, securing access to important resources, and maintaining stability along its northeastern border.

At the same time, Myanmar's leadership is seeking to expand diplomatic and economic relations with neighboring countries as it faces continued international pressure and sanctions from several Western nations.

Human rights groups have criticized the visit, arguing that high level engagement could help legitimize Myanmar's military backed government. They continue to call for greater international pressure on the authorities over allegations of human rights abuses and the suppression of political opposition.

Despite such criticism, India appears determined to pursue a pragmatic approach that balances security concerns, economic interests, and regional stability. Officials say maintaining communication and cooperation with Myanmar is important for addressing shared challenges and promoting development in the region.

The outcome of the visit is expected to influence future cooperation between the two countries in trade, infrastructure, security, and regional diplomacy, highlighting Myanmar's continuing importance in India's foreign policy and strategic planning.
