Perth: A unique celebration of faith, history and culture will take place in Perth from July 24 to 26 as St Joseph Syro-Malabar Parish hosts the Syro-Malabar Cultural Heritage Exhibition, an ambitious initiative designed to introduce the rich spiritual and cultural legacy of the Syro-Malabar Church to the wider community. The exhibition aims to provide younger generations growing up in Australia with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of their ancestral faith traditions, history and identity while fostering a greater appreciation of the Church's enduring heritage.
Inauguration by Bishop Mar John Panamthottathil
The exhibition will be officially inaugurated on July 24 at 4:30 pm by Bishop Mar John Panamthottathil, Eparch of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Melbourne. Organised under the leadership of Catholic Congress as part of the Year of Community Empowerment, the event is being conducted in collaboration with various ministries of St Joseph Syro-Malabar Parish. Organisers say the exhibition reflects a collective effort to preserve and pass on the treasured traditions of one of the world's oldest Christian communities.

Tracing the Apostolic Roots of the Syro-Malabar Church
The central theme of the exhibition is the remarkable journey of faith of the Syro-Malabar Church, tracing its roots from the apostolic mission of St Thomas the Apostle to the present day. Through an extensive display of historical documents, sacred relics, antiquities, photographs and liturgical artefacts, visitors will be taken on a journey through centuries of Christian faith and tradition. The exhibition seeks to highlight how the Church's spiritual heritage has been faithfully preserved and handed down across generations.
Seven Themes Showcasing Centuries of Church Heritage
Designed around seven major themes, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the Church's history and development. Visitors will explore the apostolic origins of Christianity in India from AD 52, significant historical milestones of the Church, the development of Syro-Malabar liturgy and spirituality, and the evolution of Christian culture and artistic traditions over the centuries. The exhibition will also showcase the contributions of Christians to the social and educational advancement of Kerala, the inspiring witness of saints from Kerala, and the growth and development of the Syro-Malabar Church in Australia.

Migration Story and Community Participation in Australia
A special section dedicated to the migration history of the Syro-Malabar community in Australia will highlight the sacrifices, achievements and faith journey of migrant families who helped establish thriving parish communities across the country. Various parish ministries including the Evangelization Ministry, Syro Malabar Young Couples Ministry, Syro Malabar Youth Ministry, Jesus Youth, Catholic Congress, Nurses Ministry and Mathruvedi will present themed stalls under the banner "Our Heritage."
Cultural Experiences, Food Stalls and Performances
Visitors can also enjoy traditional Nasrani food stalls, interactive photo booths, games, quizzes and cultural performances. Traditional art forms such as Margam Kali, Parichamuttu Kali and other ancient Christian dance traditions will add colour and vibrancy to the three-day event, providing an engaging experience for families and children.
Leadership and Community Invitation
The event is being coordinated by an organising committee led by Bishop Mar John Panamthottathil, Parish Vicar Fr Ajith Cheriakkara and Assistant Vicar Fr Bibin Velamparambil. Organisers have extended an open invitation to parishioners, families and members of the wider community to attend the exhibition and experience the rich faith heritage, traditions and cultural treasures of the Syro-Malabar Church.
