Pope Leo urges priests to reflect the heart of Christ and serve with love

Vatican City:  On the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pope Leo XIV called on priests around the world to deepen their union with Christ, become living witnesses of the Good Shepherd, and dedicate themselves completely to God and His people.

In a message released for the Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests, celebrated annually on the feast of the Sacred Heart, the Pope reflected on the meaning of holiness and the mission entrusted to priests in a world facing division, fear and uncertainty.

Pope Leo reminded priests that holiness is not an optional path or a distant ideal. Rather, he said, it is at the heart of Christian life and is closely linked to the identity of those who seek to follow the risen Christ.

Pope explained that the holiness God asks of His people is rooted in trust and surrender. He described it as allowing oneself to be transformed by the Holy Spirit through daily openness to God's grace.

Acknowledging the struggles and weaknesses that are part of human life, Pope Leo noted that people are often limited, imperfect, tired and wounded. Yet despite these realities, God continues to call His people to share in His own holiness.

Reflecting particularly on the priesthood, the Pope said that union with the Heart of Christ is not reserved for a privileged few. Instead, it is a journey that unfolds day by day through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and through faithful service.

He emphasized that ordination configures priests to Christ, but this gift must be continually renewed. According to the Pope, priests strengthen their vocation through the daily celebration of the Eucharist, prayer, meditation on Scripture and humble service to others.

Pope Leo also highlighted that every aspect of a priest's life can become a place where God reveals His love. Prayer, ministry, relationships, moments of joy, experiences of failure and even times that seem unproductive can all become opportunities for encountering God's presence.

He said that priests with simple, sincere and pure hearts are capable of remaining contemplative even while carrying out demanding responsibilities. Such priests, he added, can remain merciful during difficult moments and joyful in their selfless service.

Pope stressed that today's world needs more than words and programs. It needs pastors whose lives visibly reflect Christ. A priest who is deeply united to the Heart of Jesus, he said, becomes a credible witness of unity, peace and mercy.

At a time when many societies experience conflict, anxiety and fragmentation, Pope Leo encouraged priests to become builders of peace. He urged them to imitate the tenderness of the Good Shepherd who gathers those who are scattered and heals those who are wounded.

Pope also clarified that holiness is not achieved primarily through personal perfection or extraordinary acts of sacrifice. While discipline and spiritual effort remain important, he said true holiness comes from trusting the love revealed in the pierced Heart of Jesus.

Quoting the spirit of Saint Paul's teaching, Pope Leo reflected on the mystery that Christians are called to live not for themselves but through Christ living within them.

He encouraged priests to give themselves entirely to Christ so that they may love God's people with the same compassionate and selfless love shown by Jesus.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo entrusted all priests to the care of the Virgin Mary, whom he described as the Mother of Priests. He prayed that she would help them keep alive within themselves the Heart of Christ, the Savior of the world, and inspire them to reflect His love in their ministry and daily lives.
