Russia Ukraine war surpasses First World War in duration as fighting continues with no end in sight

Kyiv: The war between Russia and Ukraine has reached a historic and troubling milestone, becoming longer than the First World War. As the conflict entered its 1,569th day this week, it officially surpassed the duration of World War I, which lasted 1,568 days from July 1914 to November 1918.

What began as Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has evolved into one of the longest and most destructive conflicts in modern European history. More than four years after the fighting began, there is still no clear path to peace, and military operations continue across several regions of Ukraine.

When Russian forces crossed into Ukraine in early 2022, many observers believed the conflict could be decided within weeks. Russian President Vladimir Putin was widely expected to achieve a quick military victory. However, strong Ukrainian resistance, backed by military and financial support from Western nations, prevented Russia from reaching its initial objectives.

Since then, the war has transformed into a prolonged struggle marked by trench warfare, artillery battles, missile attacks, and increasingly sophisticated drone operations. Large sections of the front line have remained largely unchanged for months despite repeated offensives by both sides.

Recent developments suggest that the conflict is entering a new phase. Military experts say drones have become one of the most important weapons on the battlefield. Both Russia and Ukraine are now using thousands of drones for surveillance and attacks, making it increasingly difficult for troops to move without being detected.

At the same time, Russia has intensified its air campaign against Ukrainian cities. In recent weeks, waves of missile and drone strikes have targeted key infrastructure and urban areas, causing damage and adding pressure on Ukraine's air defence systems. Ukrainian authorities continue to report civilian casualties and destruction resulting from these attacks.

Diplomatic efforts have also struggled to gain momentum. Although several countries have attempted to mediate and encourage negotiations, major disagreements remain between Moscow and Kyiv. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently questioned the value of holding a direct meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, indicating that significant differences continue to stand in the way of meaningful peace talks.

Ukraine, meanwhile, is seeking additional military support from its international partners. Reports indicate that Kyiv plans to request billions of dollars in further assistance to strengthen its defence capabilities and maintain pressure on Russian forces. Ukrainian officials argue that continued support is essential both for national security and for improving the country's position in any future negotiations.

Beyond the battlefield, the war continues to reshape Europe's political landscape. The European Union has taken important steps toward opening formal accession talks with Ukraine, a move seen as both a strategic and symbolic victory for Kyiv.

As the conflict enters its fifth year, many analysts believe neither side is currently capable of securing a decisive military victory. Instead, the war appears increasingly likely to remain a long struggle of endurance, where economic strength, military innovation, and international support will play crucial roles.

The milestone of surpassing the duration of the First World War serves as a reminder of the immense human cost of the conflict. Millions of people have been displaced, thousands have lost their lives, and entire communities have been transformed by war. While hopes for peace remain alive, the prospect of a quick resolution appears as distant as ever.
