A Memorable Meeting in Switzerland: Thampi Antony, the Heartbeat of Malayalam Beyond Borders

On a peaceful day in Switzerland, I visited the home of my friends Nibu and Lisa. Awaiting me there was an unexpected and unforgettable encounter. Staying with them as a guest was renowned writer, actor, producer, and entrepreneur Thampi Antony, who was visiting Switzerland from the United States.

For anyone who loves literature, this was far more than an ordinary visit. It was a rare opportunity to meet a man who has spent decades enriching Malayalam literature, cinema, and the cultural life of the global Malayali diaspora. The warm hospitality of Nibu and Lisa made the meeting even more memorable.

Thampi Antony’s literary journey began with poetry. As a young boy in Ponkunnam, his love for books was nurtured through the local public library. Reading inspired poetry; poetry led him to theatre, and theatre eventually opened the doors to short stories, novels, screenwriting, and cinema.

In the United States, he wrote and staged numerous plays for Malayalam associations. His plays beautifully reflected the memories, struggles, family relationships, and emotional attachment to the homeland that define the immigrant experience. Over the years, his creative world expanded through novels, short stories, screenplays, and films.

His contribution extends well beyond literature. As an actor and producer, Thampi Antony has established a distinguished presence in Malayalam cinema, proving that literature and the arts are inseparable from life itself. At the same time, he has built a successful career as an entrepreneur in the United States, while never abandoning his passion for writing. That ability to balance business and creativity is one of the most remarkable aspects of his personality.

“Writing is not for fame. One should write only when there is a truth within that cannot remain unspoken,” he told me during our conversation. As someone who deeply admires literature and the arts, I found his words both inspiring and humbling at the same time. His advice to aspiring writers was simple yet profound: read more, observe people, understand life, and transform your experiences into words.

The gathering at Nibu and Lisa’s home was much more than a friendly visit. It became a meaningful exchange where literature, cinema, migration, and human relationships naturally came together. Throughout the day, I witnessed the home gradually transform into a small but vibrant cultural meeting place where ideas, memories, and friendships were shared.

Thampi Antony also expressed concern about the future of Malayalam culture among expatriate communities. He reflected on how the first generation of immigrants built strong cultural organisations and preserved their language, while questioning how that same passion can be passed on to younger generations. He believes that when a language survives, a people’s culture, identity, and collective memory survives with it.

Although he has spent many years in America, the fragrance of Kerala and the spirit of the Malayalam language remain deeply rooted in his heart. Despite his success as an entrepreneur, artist, and writer, his humility, warmth, and simplicity continues to define him.

Having written the screenplays for two Malayalam films, Thampi Antony has also delivered memorable performances in several films. Yet one statement during our conversation revealed the essence of who he truly is: “Acting gives me happiness. But writing gives me even greater joy. Above all, I am a writer.”

One of the most significant milestones in his acting career came in 2005, when he received the Best Actor Award at the Honolulu International Film Festival for his powerful portrayal of Dr. Acharya in the English-language film Beyond the Soul (2002), directed by Rajeev Anchal. He became the first Indian actor to receive this prestigious honour, a landmark achievement that brought pride not only to Indian cinema but especially to the Malayalam film industry.

Thampi Antony is also the brother of acclaimed Malayalam actor Babu Antony. Yet beyond that family connection, he has established an independent identity through his literary achievements, artistic contributions, cinematic work, and entrepreneurial success. His life stands as a testament to how passion, perseverance, and creativity can transcend borders while remaining firmly rooted in one’s language and culture.
