Athens: The Mediterranean Sea is undergoing one of the biggest environmental changes in its modern history as rising sea temperatures caused by climate change continue to encourage the spread of invasive marine species. Scientists say warmer waters are helping fish and other sea creatures from tropical regions establish themselves across the Mediterranean, threatening native marine life, damaging fishing industries and creating new challenges for coastal communities.

According to marine researchers, the Mediterranean has become one of the world's fastest warming seas and is now considered a climate change hotspot. Sea temperatures have risen steadily over recent decades, creating conditions that allow species from the Red Sea and other warmer regions to survive and reproduce in waters where they could not live before. Experts warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, these changes could become even more widespread and difficult to reverse.

A large number of these invasive species have entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, which connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean. Scientists estimate that nearly 1,000 non native marine species have now been recorded in the region, with around 800 already established as permanent residents. This movement of marine life through the canal has accelerated as sea temperatures have increased, allowing tropical fish to move farther north than ever before.

Among the most concerning species are lionfish, rabbitfish and the silver cheeked toadfish, also known as the toxic pufferfish. These fish are rapidly expanding their range across the eastern and central Mediterranean. While lionfish are known for their venomous spines and ability to prey on native fish, rabbitfish feed heavily on underwater vegetation, damaging important marine habitats. The silver cheeked toadfish is considered one of the most dangerous because it contains a powerful natural toxin that can be fatal if eaten. It also causes significant damage to fishing nets with its sharp teeth, creating heavy financial losses for fishermen.

Marine biologists say the growing number of invasive species is already changing the Mediterranean ecosystem. Native fish and shellfish are struggling to compete for food and habitat. In some coastal regions, populations of local mollusks have dropped dramatically, while mussels have almost disappeared from parts of the Adriatic Sea because of unusually warm waters. Researchers warn that these changes are disrupting marine food chains and reducing biodiversity across the region.

Fishing communities are among those feeling the greatest impact. Fishermen in countries including Greece and Cyprus report declining catches of traditional commercial fish as invasive species spread into their fishing grounds. Many say they spend large amounts of money replacing damaged nets destroyed by toxic pufferfish. Some have reported losing thousands of euros each year because of equipment damage and lower fish catches.

Governments and researchers are now exploring ways to reduce the impact of these invasive species. Greece has introduced pilot programmes that compensate fishermen for removing toxic pufferfish from coastal waters. Scientists are also studying whether some edible invasive fish could be safely marketed as seafood to help control their growing populations. Increased monitoring of marine ecosystems and stronger cooperation among Mediterranean countries are also being encouraged.

The spread of invasive fish comes as southern Europe continues to experience repeated marine heatwaves and unusually high sea temperatures. Scientists say these prolonged periods of warm water are making it easier for tropical species to survive year-round, increasing the likelihood that even more invasive species will become permanently established in the Mediterranean.

Researchers believe it is now impossible to completely remove many of the invasive species that have already become established. Instead, they stress the importance of slowing the arrival of new species through better management of shipping activities, improved monitoring and stronger efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are driving global warming.

Scientists warn that the Mediterranean offers a clear picture of how climate change is reshaping marine ecosystems around the world. Without stronger action to limit rising temperatures and protect marine biodiversity, they say coastal communities, fisheries and fragile sea ecosystems are likely to face even greater challenges in the years ahead.
