London: The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence is facing fresh questions over the security of its military supply chains after cameras fitted to Royal Navy unmanned boats were found communicating with an internet address in China.
The issue involves the K3 Scout, an unmanned surface vessel used by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines for surveillance and other military tasks. The vessels were developed by British company Kraken Technology and are part of Britain's growing effort to use autonomous systems in military operations.
The discovery was made during a routine cybersecurity assessment. Investigators found that components inside cameras fitted to the vessels were sending what have been described as heartbeat communications to an internet address linked to China. These signals are generally used by electronic equipment to confirm that a device is active or operating.
The discovery immediately raised concerns because the cameras were being used on equipment connected to British military operations. The Ministry of Defence responded by disconnecting the cameras from the internet.
British officials have stressed that there is no evidence that sensitive military information was stolen or sent to China. The Ministry of Defence has also said that there is no evidence that military systems were compromised through the camera connection.
That clarification is important because some reports have described the incident as British military drones secretly sending data to China. The available evidence points to technical communications from a component rather than confirmed transmission of classified British military information.
The discovery has nevertheless caused concern inside Britain's defence establishment because it highlights the difficulty of checking every component used in modern military equipment.
The K3 Scout vessels contain a range of electronic systems, sensors and cameras. While the complete platform is supplied by a British company, some individual components are manufactured overseas.
