Indonesia fires raise fears of a wider Southeast Asian haze crisis

Jakarta: Indonesia is facing a rapidly growing wildfire crisis as unusually dry and hot weather continues to fuel fires across large parts of the country. Nearly 95,000 hectares of land were damaged by fires in July alone, according to the latest government figures. The scale of the destruction has raised concerns that the country could be heading towards one of its most difficult fire seasons in years, with the worst of the dry season still ahead.

The sharp rise in fires has been linked to strengthening El Niño conditions, which are bringing hotter temperatures and less rainfall to many parts of Indonesia. The weather pattern does not directly start every fire, but it creates extremely dry conditions that allow fires to spread quickly once they begin. Dry vegetation, dried peatlands and strong winds are making firefighting much more difficult.

Government figures show that more than 107,000 hectares of land were already affected by fires between January and June. The addition of the large area damaged in July shows how quickly the situation has changed. July alone accounted for almost 95,000 hectares, making it a particularly damaging month.

Authorities are now preparing for the possibility that the situation could become worse in August, September and October. These months are traditionally among the most dangerous periods for fires in Indonesia because rainfall can remain low while vegetation and peatlands become increasingly dry.

Thousands of firefighters and disaster response personnel have been deployed to areas affected by the fires. Helicopters are being used in some locations to drop water on difficult fires, while teams on the ground are working to stop flames from spreading into forests, plantations and communities.

Indonesia is also trying to use cloud seeding to encourage rainfall over areas affected by fires. The government hopes that artificial rain can help firefighters control burning areas and reduce the amount of smoke in the atmosphere. However, cloud seeding depends on the presence of suitable clouds with enough moisture. Extremely dry conditions can make this method difficult or impossible to use.

The fires are also creating a growing threat to air quality. Smoke from burning forests and land has already affected parts of Indonesia and is raising concerns in neighbouring countries. Singapore has warned that hazy conditions could develop if fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan become more intense. Malaysia is also preparing for the possibility of worsening transboundary haze as dry weather continues.

The return of haze is particularly worrying because Southeast Asia has experienced serious air pollution crises during previous Indonesian fire seasons. Thick smoke can travel across national borders and affect cities and rural communities far from the original fires. Poor air quality can be especially dangerous for children, older people and those with breathing problems.

The environmental damage is also extending to wildlife. In West Kalimantan, fires recently came dangerously close to an orangutan rehabilitation centre. Staff were forced to move about 60 rescued orangutans to safer areas as flames approached. The incident highlighted the wider threat facing Indonesia's forests and wildlife as fires spread through dry landscapes.

The causes of the fires are not limited to weather. Human activity remains an important factor. Land clearing, burning of vegetation and accidental fires can become much harder to control during prolonged drought. Peatlands are especially dangerous because fires can continue to burn beneath the surface and are difficult to extinguish completely.

The Indonesian government is therefore facing pressure to strengthen both emergency firefighting and long term prevention. Preventing people from starting fires, protecting peatlands and improving monitoring could become increasingly important if dry conditions continue.

For neighbouring countries, the coming weeks will be closely watched. If rainfall remains limited and fire activity increases during the peak dry season, Indonesia could face a much larger environmental and public health emergency.

For now, the nearly 95,000 hectares damaged in July serves as a warning of how quickly the situation can change. With El Niño strengthening and dry conditions continuing, Indonesia is entering a critical period in which the response to the fires could determine whether the current crisis remains manageable or develops into another major Southeast Asian haze emergency.
