Punnamada turns into a sea of excitement as Nehru Trophy boat race begins

Alappuzha: The calm waters of Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha are turning into a scene of colour, noise and excitement today as Kerala hosts the 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Thousands of people have gathered along the banks and around the lake to watch one of the state's most famous sporting and cultural celebrations. The event brings together traditional boat racing, local pride, music and the festive spirit of Kerala.

A total of 71 boats are taking part in this year's competition, including 22 traditional chundan vallams, widely known as snake boats. These long boats are among the most recognisable symbols of Kerala's backwater culture. Their races are known for the remarkable coordination of the rowers, who move their oars together while traditional songs, drums, whistles and cheers fill the air.

The main races are being held on the famous Punnamada Lake, where the narrow and powerful boats compete for victory. For the people of the participating villages, the event is much more than a sporting competition. It is closely connected with community pride and identity. Months of preparation, training and fundraising go into preparing a boat and its team for the race.

The Nehru Trophy has a long history. The event began in 1952 after India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alappuzha and took part in a boat ride. The experience reportedly left a strong impression on him, and a trophy was later presented for the annual race. Over the decades, the competition has grown into one of Kerala's best known cultural and sporting events.

This year's event is also attracting considerable political and public attention. Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan is scheduled to inaugurate the programme, while Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is attending as the chief guest and is expected to present prizes to the winners. Several ministers, MPs, MLAs and other public representatives are also taking part in the day's programmes.

The administration has made extensive arrangements to handle the large crowds. Alappuzha district has declared August 22 a local holiday for government offices and educational institutions in connection with the boat race. Public examinations scheduled for the day will continue as planned.
