Kollam: Kollam Assisi, a theatre group known for its religious and moral dramas, is preparing to return to the stage with a new production titled “Francis of Assisi”. The play will be presented at venues across Kerala and outside the state from December 2026.
Written by Father Danny Cappuchan and directed by Jijo Joseph, the new production seeks to bring the life and legacy of St Francis of Assisi to audiences through theatre. The title launch took place at the Pastoral Orientation Centre (POC) in Ernakulam on Wednesday, October 14. Lizzy K. Fernandes, a film producer known for her association with films such as “Swargam” and “Aghosham”, launched the title
Several Church representatives and other personalities attended the event and extended their wishes to the theatre group and its new production. The return of Kollam Assisi to the stage continues the group's longstanding connection with religious theatre. Based in Kollam, the group gained recognition through its Bible dramas and has presented around 50 plays in Kerala and other parts of the country.
The theatre group and its arts club were founded by Father Ferdinand Manayil. Under the leadership of Father Faustine Capuchin, the group continued its theatrical activities, using drama as a way to share spiritual values and moral teachings.
Over the years, Kollam Assisi has used the stage to communicate messages of faith, human values and Christian life to audiences. Its new production on St Francis of Assisi continues this tradition.
St Francis of Assisi is widely remembered in the Christian tradition for his simplicity, humility and concern for the poor and for creation. His life has inspired generations of believers, making his story a meaningful subject for religious and cultural presentations.
With the title launch completed, the group is preparing to take “Francis of Assisi” to audiences from December. The production is expected to bring its message of faith and service to theatre lovers in Kerala and beyond.
