Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong after crossing the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge, according to South Korean media reports. The reported visit comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between Pyongyang and Beijing as the two countries continue efforts to strengthen their political and economic ties.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported on Saturday that Kim had arrived in Dandong, citing an unidentified South Korean government source. The report was also carried by major international news organisations. However, North Korea and China had not officially confirmed the reported arrival in the information available at the time of publication.
The purpose of the reported visit, Kim’s planned itinerary and whether he is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping remain unclear. No new agreements or official announcements linked to the reported trip had been confirmed.
The reported crossing has attracted attention because it comes just nine days after the New Yalu River Bridge officially opened to traffic on October 15. The bridge connects Dandong, in China’s northeastern Liaoning province, with Sinuiju in North Korea’s North Pyongan province. It provides a new route for transport and trade between the neighbouring countries.
The bridge is approximately three kilometres long and has four lanes carrying traffic in both directions. Construction began in 2011, and the structure was completed in 2014. However, it remained unused for more than a decade because the necessary roads and border facilities on the North Korean side had not been completed.
The opening marked an important development in transport links between the two countries. During the opening ceremony, Chinese Premier Li Qiang described the project as an important step towards strengthening economic and trade cooperation. North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song also delivered a video address.
The bridge is intended to improve cross border transport and support the movement of goods and people. However, the timing of Kim’s reported arrival does not establish whether his trip is directly connected to the opening or whether he plans to announce new economic initiatives.
The development comes after a period of renewed high level contact between Kim and Xi. Kim’s previous known visit to China took place in September 2025, when he attended the 80th anniversary Victory Day commemorations in Beijing and met the Chinese president.
In June 2026, Xi visited Pyongyang for talks with Kim. It was Xi’s first visit to North Korea in seven years. The two leaders discussed strengthening relations and expanding cooperation between their countries.
China and North Korea have maintained close political ties for decades, although their relationship has also faced challenges. China remains an important economic partner for North Korea, while Pyongyang continues to face international pressure over its nuclear weapons programme.
The recent diplomatic exchanges and the opening of the new bridge provide important background to the latest report. If confirmed, Kim’s arrival in China would represent another significant development in relations between the two neighbouring countries.
North Korea has also strengthened its relationship with Russia in recent years. Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin have pledged to expand cooperation, while North Korean support for Russia’s war in Ukraine has drawn international attention. The reported trip to China may therefore interest governments watching Pyongyang’s relations with its major partners. However, there is no confirmed evidence that the visit is intended to change the balance between North Korea’s relationships with China and Russia.
The development also comes at a sensitive time for the Korean Peninsula. South Korea recently proposed military talks with North Korea to clarify the military demarcation line and reduce the risk of accidental clashes. The proposal followed landmine explosions that injured three South Korean soldiers in September. Seoul blamed North Korean mines, while Pyongyang denied responsibility.
Meanwhile, Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader’s sister, said on October 21 that North Korea planned to activate loudspeakers broadcasting propaganda against South Korea along the border by the end of the month. Her remarks reflected continuing tensions between the two Koreas.
The United States has also expressed interest in restarting diplomatic talks with Kim. President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, next month. However, no information available at the time of publication confirmed that Kim’s reported visit was connected to a possible meeting with Trump or any planned negotiations involving Washington.
The immediate focus remains on confirming Kim’s reported arrival and establishing the purpose of his trip. An official announcement from Pyongyang or Beijing, details of his itinerary or confirmation of a meeting with Xi could provide a clearer picture of the latest developments in relations between China and North Korea.
Until the visit is officially confirmed, the reported arrival should be treated as a developing story.
