The Kashmir Files, a Bollywood movie directed by Vivek Agnihotri, which opened to limited screens in India is scoring big at the box office. The movie fueled with loads of positive reviews from fans, rapidly gained more screens in theatres across the country.
It narrates the story of the real-life exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits during the Kashmir Insurgency. The movie features Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, Puneet Issar and Prakash Belawadi in pivotal roles. Several artists, film critics and historians have praised the film. The plot frequently switches between the contemporary period (2021) and flashbacks to 1989–1990 throughout the movie.
Accusations that the movie carried a Sangh Parivar agenda, did not affect its box office performance negatively, rather it spread to over 2,000 screens across the world, breaking box office records.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has showered praises on the movie. During his latest BJP Parliamentary meeting, the PM lauded it and even urged everyone to watch it.
States like Bihar, Gujarat and Karnataka have announced tax breaks for the movie, with some demanding that it creates communal tensions.
The Kashmir Files was set to release theatrically worldwide on 26 January 2022, coinciding with India's Republic Day, but was postponed due to the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
It was released in over 630 screens in India on 11 March 2022. The movie, which is said to be made from a budget of Rs 180 crores, earned Rs 97.30 crore at the domestic box office in its opening week and emerged as a box-office hit within its first two days of release. As of 17 March 2022, it has collected Rs 97.30 crore at the domestic box office and an estimated amount of Rs 5 crore at the overseas markets in its opening weekend.
According to a report in FilmiBeat, the movie's digital rights are owned by OTT giant ZEE5. The movie, which is currently running successfully in theatres, will start streaming on the OTT platform from the last week of April.
