Irish Archbishop Noel Treanor appointed Apostolic Nuncio to EU

Vatican City - Pope Francis on Saturday appointed the Irish Archbishop, Most Reverend Noel Treanor as Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union.

A statement released by the Holy See Press Office said the Pope also elevated the Irish Bishop of Down and Connor to the rank of Archbishop.

Archbishop Treanor was born on 25 December 1950 in Siverstream, Ireland. He studied art and philosophy, then turned towards theology and completed his licentiate.

On 13 June 1976, he was ordained a priest and incardinated in the Diocese of Clogher.

On 29 June 2008, he was consecrated a Bishop, for the diocese of Down and Connor.

From 1993 to 2008 he served as General Secretary of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) with headquarters in Brussels.

Archbishop Treanor is a Delegate of the Irish Bishops’ Conference to COMECE since 2009.

He speaks English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
