Rescue workers pulled 14 people, including two children, out of the rubble after a residential apartment block collapsed in the northern Indian city of Lucknow, but more were feared trapped inside, a local police official said on Tuesday.
At least 12 more people were feared trapped, the official said, as rescue workers sought to clear rubble and debris from the site, located in a crowded and posh area of Lucknow, the capital of India's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh.
Police did not immediately comment on any possible reasons for the collapse.
While talking to the media persons, the DGP said, "Five people are still stuck under the debris and proper oxygen is being supplied to them. They are in the same room. The NDRF, SDRF personnel had slipped in two cylinders into holes which have been drilled to reach to the point where three people are said to be trapped. Oxygen supply is being maintained.
'30-35 families were living in the five-storey residential building. Police in Meerut detained former state cabinet minister and SP leader Shahid Manzoor's son Nawazish Shahid. As per the records available with the district administration, the land agreement of the plot on which the apartment was constructed, was in the name of Nawazish. Nawazish was now being brought to Lucknow for questioning.
