Los Angeles – Asians won accolades at the Oscars with 'Naatu Naatu', from RRR was awarded the Best Original Song, 'The Elephant Whisperers' earned the Best: Documentary (Short Subject) and Michelle Yeoh winning the Best Actress for 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'.

India’s first with two Oscar wins
RRR and The Elephant Whisperers, earned India two Oscar-winning films in one night. Indians had won Oscars previously; however no fully Indian film had won an Academy Award before Sunday night in Los Angles.

"Naatu Naatu," the fast-paced hit from the action movie "RRR," won the Academy Award for best original song, making history as the first movie from the country to win the honour.

The dance number has already garnered the Golden Globe award and the Critics' Choice award for the best song.

The stellar performance of the song at the Oscar ceremony by the track’s singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava and a group of dancers earned a standing ovation from the elite crowd.

The song is composed by music director MM Keeravaani, and sung by Kala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, with lyrics by Chandrabose.

The movie RRR is inspired by the lives of freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, RRR narrates a fictional tale set in the 1920s. The film boasts an ensemble cast, starring the likes of Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, and Ray Stevenson.

The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, won Best Documentary Short Subject at the 95th Academy Awards.

The Elephant Whisperers, set in the Mudumalai National Park, is the tale of an orphaned elephant calf named Raghu in the care of Bomman and Belli, an indigenous couple. The documentary celebrates not just the bond that develops between them as well as the natural beauty of their surroundings. The Elephant Whisperers was released on Netflix in December 2022.

Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar history with “Everything Everywhere All at Once”
Michelle Yeoh won the Academy Award for best actress and made history all at once.

The Malaysian-born actor became the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for best actress on Sunday night for her multifaceted performance in the multiversal “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility. This is proof that dreams dream big and dreams do come true,” she said. “And ladies, don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re past your prime.”

Yeoh’s victory comes almost 90 years after Luise Rainer, a white actor, won the same category for donning “yellowface” to play a Chinese villager in “The Good Earth.”

Her win was one of seven Oscars for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” including best picture and editing. Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan also won best supporting actor Oscars. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won for best directors and original screenplay.
