BEIJING : Most recently, in March 2023, China announced that it was renaming six places in Arunachal Pradesh, which sparked a fresh round of protests from India. India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement condemning China's actions and reiterating India's position that the region is an integral part of India.
In response, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson claimed that the country had "sovereignty" over the region and that the renaming of places was a "legitimate and necessary" exercise of that sovereignty. This statement was strongly condemned by India, which reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and that China's claims were without any basis in fact.
The dispute over Arunachal Pradesh is a long-standing one and is unlikely to be resolved in the near future. Both India and China have staked out their positions and remain firmly entrenched in them, with little room for compromise. The situation is further complicated by the broader geopolitical tensions between the two countries, as well as their competing strategic interests in the region.
