BANGALORE - The Indian startup ecosystem has been hit hard by a wave of layoffs, with more than 24,250 employees losing their jobs across 84 startups till date. The layoffs have been attributed to various factors such as the funding winter and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Practo, a leading digital healthcare platform, recently laid off 41 employees, mainly engineers, as part of its continuous performance management and planning process. Quick-grocery delivery provider Dunzo laid off at least 30% of its workforce, nearly 300 employees, after raising $75 million in a fresh funding round. Homegrown fantasy e-sports startup FanClash laid off about 75% of its workforce, while online higher education company upGrad laid off nearly 30% of its workforce at its subsidiary "Campus".
The list of startups sacking employees is growing, with BYJU'S, Ola, OYO, Meesho, MPL, LivSpace, Innovaccer, Udaan, Unacademy and Vedantu, among others, leading the layoff tally. The layoffs have impacted employees from various departments, including sales, tech, and product teams.
