Washington - American President Joe Biden offered a sarcastic response to the impeachment inquiry launched against him by Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week.
During a press conference, when asked about the impeachment proceedings, President Biden quipped, "Lots of luck."
Speaker McCarthy cited "serious and credible" allegations against Biden as the reason for initiating the probe, although the full scope of the investigation remains unclear. According to a report by Bloomberg, the inquiry is expected to explore potential connections between President Biden and his son Hunter Biden's international business dealings.
In response to the Republican allegations, President Biden asserted that he has "never discussed business" with Hunter's business associates. He also commented, "Best I can tell, they want to impeach me because they want to shut down the government," regarding the allegations against him, as reported by Bloomberg.
The House of Representatives has only approved one of the 12 bills necessary to fund the government, raising concerns of a potential partial federal government shutdown as the fiscal year draws to a close on September 30th, according to the report.
In a related development, President Biden's son, Hunter Biden, recently faced federal gun charges. The 53-year-old has been accused of providing false statements about his drug use when acquiring a firearm in October 2018. He acknowledged struggling with a crack cocaine addiction, as detailed in the indictment filed in Delaware federal court. Federal prosecutors, led by special counsel David Weiss, charged Hunter with three offenses, including two counts related to alleged false statements during the firearm purchase and one count for possessing a firearm while being addicted to drugs.
