Ankara - Today in the heart of Ankara, the capital of Turkey, a suicide bomber triggered an explosive device, just hours before the parliament was scheduled to reconvene following a three-month summer recess. The interior minister confirmed that a second attacker was killed in a confrontation with the police.
Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported on X (formerly Twitter) that two police officers sustained minor injuries during the attack, which occurred near an entrance to the Ministry of Interior Affairs.
This incident unfolded as the parliament was preparing to resume its sessions, featuring an address by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
As of now, there is no immediate information available regarding the identities of the assailants. In the past, various groups, including Kurdish and far-left militant organizations, as well as the Daesh group, have carried out lethal attacks across the country.
According to Yerlikaya, the attackers arrived at the scene in a light commercial vehicle.
Television footage showed bomb disposal units working near a parked vehicle in the vicinity, which is situated close to the Turkish Grand National Assembly and several government structures. A rocket launcher was visible near the vehicle.
Police cordoned off access to the city center as a precautionary measure.
Media reports indicated that the two injured police officers were receiving treatment at a hospital and were not in critical condition.
