JERUSALEM- Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that governs the Gaza Strip, has declared its readiness to confront Israeli attacks "with full force" as Israel has expanded its air and ground operations in the region.

The escalation followed clashes between Hamas fighters and Israeli troops near the border. Israel reported intensified attacks and cut off internet and phone services, which were attributed to Israeli bombardments.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari announced that ground forces were expanding their operations, raising concerns about a potential ground invasion. Israel had been conducting an intense aerial campaign in response to an attack by hundreds of Hamas gunmen on Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian health authorities reported significant casualties, while the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian truce, aid access to Gaza, and the protection of civilians. However, the resolution was not binding.

The United States expressed support for a pause in Israeli military activity to provide humanitarian aid, fuel, and electricity to Gaza's civilians but did not specify a position on the ground operation.

As a result of the internet and phone service cutoff, rescue efforts were hampered, with Palestinians using their cars to transport the injured and dead to hospitals. Concerns were raised about the well-being of patients, medical staff, and families sheltering in health facilities.

Tensions in the region have led to fears of a wider Middle East conflict, with the U.S. sending additional military assets to the area. Much of Gaza's infrastructure has been severely damaged by Israeli bombings.

Despite renewed Israeli military warnings for Palestinians to move from the north to the south of Gaza, many have refused, fearing they may not be able to return home as seen in previous conflicts with Israel.
