The Holy See Press Office issued a statement expressing Pope Francis' support for the family of 8-month-old Indi Gregory, facing an irreversible illness. The UK courts have decided to cease her life support, despite her parents' legal efforts to maintain it.
Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, conveyed the Pope's prayers, stating, "Pope Francis stands with the family of little Indi Gregory, offering prayers for them and all children worldwide facing pain or peril due to illness or conflict."
Indi, born on February 24, 2023, suffers from a rare degenerative mitochondrial disease and is currently on life-sustaining treatment at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, England.
Although doctors argue the treatment causes unnecessary pain, Indi's parents sought to transfer her to the Vatican’s Bambino Gesù paediatric hospital in Rome. However, UK judges rejected this plea, leading the Italian government to grant her citizenship and cover medical costs for treatment in Italy.
On November 10, the UK High Court ruled for the immediate removal of Indi's life support, criticizing Italy's involvement as contrary to the 1996 Hague Convention. The specifics of when and where this decision will be implemented remain unspecified.
