In the latest developments in Nicaragua, two additional Catholic priests have been apprehended by the authorities, bringing the total to six within the past week. The recent arrests of Monsignor Carlos Avilés, the vicar general of the Diocese of Managua, and Father Héctor Treminio, the diocesan treasurer, reportedly occurred following a public prayer for Bishop Rolando Álvarez of Matagalpa.
Sources suggest that the arrests are linked to their expression of solidarity with Bishop Álvarez, who has been facing legal troubles. Bishop Álvarez was sentenced to 26 years in prison without a proper trial on charges including conspiracy, spreading false news, obstructing justice, and insulting authorities. He has been in custody since February 2023, initially under house arrest since August 2022.
The arrest of Monsignor Avilés and Father Treminio adds to the growing number of clergymen detained in Nicaragua, totaling six within the past week. Earlier, on December 20, Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora Ortega of the Diocese of Siuna was also taken into custody. Local media reports indicate that Bishop Mora's detention was linked to his public prayers for Bishop Álvarez during a homily.
The scope of these arrests now extends beyond bishops to include seminarians as well. Two seminarians, Alester Sáenz and Tony Palacio, were among those arrested in connection with the expression of support for Bishop Álvarez.
These developments raise concerns about the freedom of expression and religious practices in Nicaragua, as the government continues to take actions against members of the Catholic clergy. The international community closely watches these events, awaiting further information and responses to the escalating situation.
