House Members Intensify Call for Thorough Investigation into Late-Term Abortions

House members are intensifying their calls for a thorough investigation into the late-term abortions of five babies whose remains were discovered by pro-life activists in Washington, D.C. The discovery, dubbed the "D.C. Five," has ignited a firestorm of controversy and renewed focus on the legality of certain abortion procedures.

During a press conference held in front of the Capitol, representatives from both sides of the aisle voiced concerns over the possibility that the babies may have been subjected to a banned procedure known as "partial-birth abortion." This method, in which a baby is partially delivered before being killed, is prohibited under federal law. Rep. Chip Roy of Texas emphasized the need for transparency, stating, "We're talking about precious life that was just callously disregarded... We need to seek the truth."

The babies' remains were initially obtained by the secular pro-life group Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) in March 2022 from the Washington Surgi-Clinic, run by Dr. Cesare Santangelo. Subsequent examination revealed major lacerations, torn limbs, and crushed skulls, consistent with partial-birth abortion procedures. Despite mounting pressure for an investigation, the Department of Justice (DOJ) under the Biden administration has yet to announce any plans for action.

In response to the DOJ's inaction, members of Congress are escalating their efforts. Rep. Bob Good of Virginia accused the DOJ of being complicit in covering up the "cold-blooded murder" of these "precious lives." He urged Congress to step in if the DOJ fails to act, suggesting that it is "high time" for a congressional investigation.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas echoed these sentiments, warning that if the D.C. medical examiner's office does not conduct autopsies or preserve the bodies for outside examination, the Senate Judiciary Committee will intervene with a full hearing.

Amidst the political maneuvering, Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey emphasized the broader implications of the D.C. Five case, calling it the "tip of a much larger human rights violating iceberg." He stressed the importance of preserving evidence and holding accountable those responsible for these illegal procedures.

Legislative director Jamie Dangers of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America underscored the significance of uncovering the truth behind the D.C. Five, asserting that their bodies tell a story that exposes the true barbarity of abortion. "Their lives were cut short," she said, "but what we can do is dignify their memories and use their stories to protect other children from similar deaths."
