New Delhi - Sonia Gandhi has been unanimously re-elected as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP). Her nomination was proposed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge during a party meeting, with leaders like Gaurav Gogoi, Tariq Anwar, and K Sudhakaran seconding the proposal. This re-election comes as the Congress has significantly increased its seat count to 100, up from 52 in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, making it the second-largest party.
In her acceptance speech, Gandhi praised the party's resilience in the recent elections, highlighting their struggle against substantial opposition. "It was up against a mighty and malevolent machine that was doing its utmost to destroy us. It tried to cripple us financially. It carried out a campaign against us and our leaders that was full of lies and defamation. Many wrote our obituaries," she stated. She also commended Kharge's leadership, describing him as an inspiration and a committed leader.
Kharge, in turn, expressed his satisfaction with Gandhi's re-election, noting that she would continue to guide the party. Shashi Tharoor echoed this sentiment, stating that there was no question about her reappointment, emphasizing her longstanding leadership and guidance.
Additionally, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolved that MP Rahul Gandhi should be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. At the CWC meeting, attended by notable Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and others, Kharge acknowledged the party's successes and urged for reflection on areas where performance did not meet expectations. He emphasized the people's rejection of the ruling party's "dictatorial and anti-democratic ways" and the politics of divisiveness.
The meeting underscored the Congress party's commitment to upholding democratic values and addressing the challenges posed by the current political climate.
