New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level meeting in Delhi on Sunday with senior security officials to assess the escalating situation in Manipur following fresh outbreaks of violence, according to government sources cited by HT.
A more comprehensive review meeting is scheduled for Monday at North Block. The unrest intensified on Saturday night, prompting the imposition of an indefinite curfew and suspension of internet services in seven districts. This came after the grim discovery of six bodies—three women and three children—believed to have been abducted and killed by militants in Jiribam.
Manipur’s Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi issued an order for a two-day suspension of internet and mobile data services across the affected districts, which include Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.
The turmoil escalated further as enraged mobs set fire to the homes of prominent political leaders, including state PWD Minister Govindas Konthoujam in Ningthoukhong, BJP MLA Y Radheshyam in Langmeidong Bazar, BJP MLA Paonam Brojen in Thoubal, and Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar in Imphal East.
Adding to the tension, protesters attempted to storm the personal residence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday evening. Security forces, including personnel from Assam Rifles, BSF, and state police, used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and prevent damage to the property.
Meanwhile, protesters who had gathered to meet Keishamthong’s Independent legislator, Sapam Nishikanta Singh, at his residence on Tiddim Road in Imphal West targeted a newspaper office he owns after learning he was not in the state, according to PTI.
