Vatican City: Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, is attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 18 to 19. His visit comes in response to an invitation extended to Pope Francis by Brazil’s presidency.
The Vatican’s Secretariat of State shared the announcement on its official X account, @TerzaLoggia, noting the summit's primary focus areas: combating hunger and poverty, reforming global governance structures, advancing sustainable development, and addressing the energy transition.
The G20 Summit Agenda
While the summit's primary focus is fostering cooperation and economic policies, it will also delve into pressing global issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Russia, and the Middle East.
The G20 comprises the G7 nations alongside several emerging economies. A joint declaration is expected to be adopted by the end of the summit.
Global Participation
World leaders began arriving at the summit on Sunday, November 17, and were welcomed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. President Lula is also set to hold bilateral discussions with numerous participating nations.
In addition to the core G20 members, Brazil has announced the participation of 56 other delegations, emphasizing the summit's broad international scope.
