Vatican City: On the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pope Francis expressed hope for a peaceful and stable future in Syria amidst its ongoing crisis. Following the fall of the Assad regime and an increase in violence, the Pope shared his concern for the nation, emphasizing the need for a political resolution that ensures Syria’s unity and stability without further division or conflict. Speaking during his General Audience, he described the situation as a critical moment in the country’s history.
Pope Francis prayed for the Syrian people, entrusting them to the Virgin Mary, and urged her intercession for peace and security in their homeland. He also highlighted the importance of fostering friendship and mutual respect among Syria's diverse religious groups, including Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims, and Christians, for the greater good of the nation.
The Pope’s plea for harmony coincided with significant developments in Syria. In just two weeks, the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) gained control over key areas, including Damascus, and appointed a new prime minister to oversee the transitional government, marking the end of Assad’s 13-year regime. Meanwhile, Israel conducted a series of airstrikes targeting Syria’s strategic weapons stockpiles, adding to the region's turmoil.
Pope Francis extended his prayers beyond Syria, calling for peace in other conflict-stricken regions such as Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, and Myanmar. He urged collective efforts to find solutions and restore peace worldwide.
