Palarivattom: The Catholic Church has long upheld a firm stance against extremism and communalism, consistently rejecting ideologies that promote division and intolerance. Whenever extremist or communal views tied to various religions have posed harm to the public or to people of other faiths, the Church has been outspoken in denouncing such movements. It has continually urged both communities and religious leaders to confront and challenge these forces, taking a strong stand in defense of peace and unity.
At the level of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC), church leaders and bishops have regularly issued public statements addressing these concerns. The Church’s position remains clear: it opposes all forms of extremism and communalism, without exception.
The Church believes that all religious, community, spiritual, and political leaders must adopt a similar approach. As sectarian and hateful ideologies fueled by religious extremism spread in society, it is crucial that leaders unite in rejecting these harmful tendencies, prioritizing human dignity, brotherhood, and coexistence for the well-being and progress of the nation.
In today’s world, it is imperative to uphold the principles of pluralism, coexistence, and humanity as the foundation of modern culture. A society that disregards these values cannot rebuild or thrive. Attempts to do so will only lead to deep divisions and irreversible damage.
The Catholic Church remains resolute in its opposition to extremist ideologies masquerading as religious beliefs. It will continue to monitor and address any movements within its own community that promote hatred toward other religions. If those promoting such views refuse to amend their positions, the Church will reject them. This is not just a pastoral duty, but a responsibility to the broader society. The Church believes that love for one’s own community should never come at the expense of disrespecting others.
Those who seek to propagate ideas contrary to the Church's firm stance—who show intolerance toward the Church’s teachings on coexistence and mutual respect—are unlikely to have the genuine well-being of society in mind or to appreciate core human values.
It is the responsibility of our secular society to identify and challenge those who foster sectarianism, ensuring that pluralism and coexistence are upheld for the benefit of all.
