India and US Strengthen Energy and Trade Ties Amid Tariff Dispute

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have announced a "mega partnership" as both nations agreed on key trade and energy deals during Modi’s two-day visit to the US.

At a joint press conference, Modi highlighted India’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with the US, emphasizing a major agreement to import more American oil and gas. Trump welcomed the deal, stating it would help reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries.

"They need it. And we have it," Trump said, underlining the strategic importance of the energy deal. Experts believe that while US oil and gas imports could help India diversify its energy sources, the higher costs due to the strong dollar could pose challenges.

The discussions also touched on trade tariffs, with Trump criticizing India’s high import duties, calling them a "big problem." Modi, in response, expressed openness to lowering tariffs on US goods and purchasing American military fighter jets. Trump also confirmed plans for increased arms sales to India, including the possibility of supplying F-35 fighter jets.

Immigration issues were another key topic, with Trump announcing the extradition of a suspect linked to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Modi, in turn, pledged cooperation in repatriating undocumented Indian nationals. Recently, over 100 Indians accused of illegal immigration were deported from the US, with more expected to follow.

Meanwhile, Trump’s broader tariff policies have raised concerns globally, with new duties being considered on US trading partners, including India. The White House released data highlighting trade imbalances, particularly pointing to India’s high tariffs on US goods.

As both leaders seek to navigate economic and diplomatic challenges, the energy and trade agreements mark a step forward in US-India relations, despite ongoing concerns over tariffs and immigration policies.
