Pope Francis has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia but remains in good spirits, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office on Tuesday evening.
The update comes after Pope was hospitalized on Friday for treatment of bronchitis. Medical examinations, including laboratory tests and chest X-rays, indicate a complex health condition.
“The polymicrobial infection, which has arisen in the context of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, has required the use of corticosteroids and antibiotics, making the therapeutic treatment more complex,” the statement noted.
A follow-up CT scan conducted on Tuesday confirmed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, prompting doctors to adjust Pope’s treatment with additional pharmacological therapy. Despite the challenges, the Holy See assured that Pope Francis remains in good spirits.
The statement also highlighted that Pope received the Eucharist and spent the day alternating between rest, prayer, and reading. He expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he has received, asking the faithful to continue praying for his recovery.
This latest development adds to ongoing concerns about Pope’s health, as he has faced several respiratory issues in recent months. The Vatican continues to monitor his condition closely.
