Japan’s Nagaizumi Town Officially Recognized for World’s Smallest Park

Nagaizumi Town in Shizuoka, Japan, is now home to the world’s smallest park, officially recognized by Guinness World Records (GWR). Measuring just 0.24 square meters—roughly the size of two A3 sheets of paper—the tiny park features an entrance, a small bench, and a patch of grass.

Located a short walk from Nagaizumi Town Hall, the park was created in 1988 to make use of a small, free space on the roadside. The idea originated when a town staff member visited the United States and learned about Mill Ends Park in Portland, Oregon, which previously held the record for the world’s smallest park. Inspired to create an even smaller version, Nagaizumi Town designed the compact park, which has since gained attention from both locals and tourists.

For years, the town unofficially referred to it as the smallest park in the world. However, to gain official recognition, local authorities worked with a professional surveyor to verify its dimensions and submitted the necessary documentation to GWR.

Shuji Koyama, team leader at Nagaizumi’s construction management division, expressed relief and pride in the park’s official recognition. The tiny green space continues to be a unique attraction, drawing visitors who enjoy its charm and take photographs to commemorate the experience.
