New Delhi: Fr. Xavier Vadakkekara OFM Cap, a pioneering figure in Indian Catholic journalism and a fearless voice for truth, passed away on March 16, 2025, at the age of 72. Despite being partially blind, he revolutionized Catholic media in India, leaving behind an enduring legacy of fearless reporting, social justice advocacy, and intellectual engagement.

As the former editor of Indian Currents and Assisi Magazine (Malayalam), Fr. Vadakkekara transformed these publications into platforms for progressive thought and marginalized voices. His bold journalism fearlessly tackled government policies, religious fundamentalism, and even internal issues within the Catholic Church, earning him immense respect in media circles.

His leadership extended beyond journalism—he was the founder of Jeevan Books and Media House, playing a crucial role in shaping the Catholic Church’s media strategy in India. He mentored numerous journalists and priests, inspiring them with his unwavering commitment to truth and justice.

Fr. Vadakkekara’s remarkable career was marked by his coverage of religious attacks, his advocacy for human rights, and his fearless stance on sensitive issues. His passing is a great loss to the world of Catholic journalism, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations.

In accordance with his wishes, after funeral prayers at Christ the King Church, Dasna, Mussoorie, UP, on March 18, his body will be donated to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for medical research.
