Scholas Occurrentes Charts Ambitious Course for Global Educational Outreach

The Pontifical Foundation Scholas Occurrentes convened its inaugural assembly on March 20, 2025, marking a pivotal moment in its mission to foster a culture of encounter through education. Originating from an initiative by then-Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Scholas has evolved into a global network, now collaborating with nearly 450,000 schools and educational institutions worldwide.

During this first assembly, the foundation reaffirmed the leadership of its Directors, José María del Corral and Enrique Palmeyro, entrusting them with the continued implementation of Scholas' vision. Their stewardship has been instrumental in expanding the organization's reach and impact, aligning with Pope Francis' emphasis on creating a culture of encounter through education.

A significant outcome of the assembly was the approval of a comprehensive five-year plan aimed at broadening Scholas' educational initiatives. This strategic roadmap underscores the foundation's commitment to enhancing social integration and promoting a culture of encounter among high school students through sports, arts, and technology.

Scholas Occurrentes has been at the forefront of various international projects that embody its mission. Notably, in February 2025, the foundation facilitated an interreligious meeting in Rome, bringing together 33 young individuals from Israel, Palestine, and the United States. This initiative, known as "Middle Meets," provided a platform for participants to share experiences and foster mutual understanding, exemplifying Scholas' dedication to dialogue and peace.

In September 2024, Scholas expanded its reach to Southeast Asia, engaging approximately 200 young people from various Indonesian islands and religious backgrounds. These youths had the unique opportunity to interact with Pope Francis in Jakarta, reflecting the foundation's commitment to cultural diversity and unity.

With the newly approved five-year plan, Scholas Occurrentes is poised to further its mission of educational integration and cultural encounter on a global scale. The foundation's ongoing efforts continue to resonate with Pope Francis' vision of education as a transformative force for building bridges and fostering peace across diverse communities.
