In a significant escalation of religious tensions, Chinese security forces detained Bishop Peter Shao Zhumin of Wenzhou on March 7, 2025. The arrest stems from his leadership of a Mass on December 27, 2024, marking the commencement of the Jubilee Year—a ceremony deemed "illegal" by state authorities due to its lack of official sanction.

Bishop Shao, aged 61, presided over the Mass at Sanjia Catholic Church in Longwan, attended by 22 priests and approximately 200 faithful. Prior to the event, he had encouraged parishes to study and reflect on the Pope's bull of indiction for the Jubilee and to recite the Holy Year prayer daily after Mass. However, the local authorities claimed the service violated Article 71 of the Regulations on Religious Affairs, labeling it a "serious offense."

In response to the unauthorized gathering, officials imposed a fine of 200,000 yuan (approximately $27,500) on the church. Additionally, they threatened to demolish the residence and chapel where Bishop Shao resides, citing "illegal activities" associated with the unapproved Mass.

Refusing to acknowledge the legitimacy of the fine, Bishop Shao argued that the church's activities did not contravene any laws. His steadfast defiance led to his arrest by the Public Security Bureau, purportedly for his own "safety." As of now, his whereabouts remain undisclosed, raising concerns among the faithful regarding his well-being.

Bishop Shao's recent detention is not an isolated incident. Appointed as coadjutor bishop in 2011 with a papal mandate, he ascended to lead the diocese in 2016 following his predecessor's death. His refusal to register with the state-sponsored Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association has led to multiple arrests over the years, reflecting ongoing tensions between the underground church and the Chinese government.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by religious communities in China, particularly those resisting state control.
