A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, when the roof of the popular Jet Set nightclub suddenly gave way, killing at least 27 people and injuring 134 others, according to official reports.

Among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, governor of the Monte Cristi province in the country's north. Rescue teams continued searching the debris for possible survivors, said Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the nation's emergency operations center. The exact number of individuals inside the venue at the time of the collapse remains unknown.

President Luis Abinader expressed his condolences on social media, describing the event as a “deeply regrettable tragedy.” He added that rescue and emergency teams were working relentlessly to assist victims and recover those still unaccounted for. “Our hearts are with the grieving families,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Authorities confirmed that 138 injured people had been transported to a range of hospitals—both public and private—where they are receiving emergency and specialized treatment.

The nightclub, located near the coast, was reportedly hosting a well-attended late-night event when disaster struck. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the collapse.
