Supreme Court Affirms Citizen’s Dignity as Inviolable, Upholds Penalty on Tamil Nadu SI

Emphasizing the constitutional sanctity of individual dignity, the Supreme Court has asserted that every citizen who approaches a police station with a grievance deserves to be treated with respect. The Court reaffirmed that this right is enshrined under Article 21 of the Constitution, underscoring that no one should face humiliation or denial of justice at the hands of law enforcement.

This affirmation came as the apex court upheld a fine imposed by the Tamil Nadu Human Rights Commission on Srivilliputhur Sub-Inspector Pavul Yesudasan. The SI had refused to register an FIR in a financial fraud case involving a youth who claimed to have been swindled of ₹13 lakh. In its findings, the Commission also noted that the officer spoke in a derogatory manner to the complainant's mother.

Despite the Madras High Court having earlier validated the Commission’s action, Yesudasan sought to challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court. However, a bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan dismissed the petition, stating that there was no ground to interfere with the High Court’s decision. The Court’s ruling reinforces that dignity and fair treatment must remain non-negotiable in the justice delivery system.
